Running against Freiburg, the cold

In the first match-up this season with Freiburg at Weser Stadium the crowd saw a spectacular 5-3 victory with Marko Arnautovic scoring to make it 3-2.

Christian Streich pointed here and there on the edge of the pitch, giving directions and trying to motivate his players. But his first Bundesliga match as Freiburg head coach was hardly over and Streich just wanted to leave. Not because his team played poorly but just the opposite. The re-shaped and renewed Freiburg had just beaten Augsburg 1-0 in a relegation battle.

But Streich needed a bit of peace and quiet after the thriller. His team had won the match with a goal by youth player Matthias Ginter just two minutes before the final whistle. Following a loss in Mainz, Freiburg are in last place going into the game against Werder Bremen but Bremen boss Thomas Schaaf is full of praise for the opponents. "I think that Freiburg did an excellent job being a man down in Mainz," said Schaaf, who has respect for Freiburg's tactical, playing and fighting spirit. And the Bremen coach expects an intensive match on Sunday.

After a good showing against Leverkusen, the Green-Whites are hungry to finally collect three points. "We want to be more successful. That includes shooting more goals," said Schaaf, addressing Werder's main problem in the past weeks. "We have to expect not having much space," said Schaaf. The only thing against that is patience, a good passing game and willingness to run. The Bremen coach came up with another side effect in light of the freezing temperatures. "If we move a lot then we will not get cold," said Schaaf.
